Challenge: Greenbox is a start-up developing online tools to help families manage and reduce their home energy consumption. The company’s software identifies the electrical “fingerprint” of different appliances in the home electricity flow at the meter, and provides recommendations to homeowners based on patterns.
Solution: The idea of home energy management was conveyed through the development of a functioning board game where members of a family take turns tracking consumption of appliances, trying to reduce electricity bills, while responding to seasonal changes and rebate incentive programs. This motif played into website feature images and marketing concepts. Greenbox was acquired by SilverSpring Networks in 2009.

Challenge: Planet Metrics was developing a software tool to allow manufactures and retailers to identify products and sub-components with greatest carbon footprints. The software, built in the agile development method, needed an interface allowing both high-level summaries, and detailed product information.
Solution: The process began by identifying user types and typical actions required. The software would allow users to develop alternate “carbon modeling” scenarios by substituting components or suppliers. Working with the development team and with customer feedback, architecture maps and wireframes were refined.
